Where the Buffalo Swim
Milligan College (TN) has announced that swimming will become an intercollegiate sport at the college beginning in Fall 2007. Former Science Hill and Dobyns-Bennett High School coach Ron Goehring will head the program. The team will utilize the college’s 25-meter swimming pool, located in Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.

Getting Down to Bidness
On February 4, Oklahoma Wesleyan University put one year of tuition, fees, room and board up for auction on eBay.com. According to the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise, “Officials at eBay have told the school they do not know of any other college or university to auction such an offer before.” The winning bid on February 13 was $18,699.99.  

National Merit Scholars at NACCAP Colleges
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation reports that 94 institutions enrolled twenty or more freshmen who were named Merit Scholars in 2006.  NACCAP member Calvin College (MI) had 29 new Merit Scholars while Wheaton College (IL) had 36.

Half a Million for Enhanced Communication
Asbury College (KY) has received a gift of $500,000 from the James Graham Brown Foundation for the construction of a communication arts center. Asbury College’s communication arts department has been actively involved in the Olympic Games, having sent students to help broadcast the Olympics since 1984 and preparing to send 50 students to Beijing in 2008.

Test or Talk at Whitworth
Whitworth College (WA) announced in February that it is dropping a requirement that all applicants submit either the SAT or the ACT. Applicants who do not submit test scores will be required to have an interview. In addition, the test scores will be required prior to registration, to be used for placement purposes.

New NACCAP Presidents


In March, Asbury College (KY) named Dr. Sandra Gray as the College’s 17th President. Dr. Gray currently serves as provost and will begin her term as president July 1.  Gray received her Ph.D. in public administration with a focus on international economics from the University of Kentucky. In 1989, Dr. Gray joined Asbury’s faculty as a professor of business management.

 

 

George Fox University (OR) will elevate its provost, Dr. Robin Baker, to president in July 2007.  Baker has overseen a dramatic expansion of academic programs at the university since 1999. He holds a doctorate in history from Texas A&M University.

 

 

 

Westmont College (CA) has named Dr. Gayle Beebe as the college’s eighth president, effective July 1, 2007. Beebe has served as president of Spring Arbor University in Michigan for the past seven years.

 

 

Dr. Barry H. Corey has been named Biola University’s eighth president, effective July 1, 2007. His tenure will officially launch the celebration of Biola’s centennial year. Dr. Corey, 45, will succeed Dr. Clyde Cook, who is one of the longest-standing college presidents in the nation, serving as Biola’s president since 1982. Since 2002, Corey has been Vice President/Chief Academic Officer and Academic Dean of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (MA).


North Greenville Idol


 

Chris Sligh, a former North Greenville University (SC) music major, was one of twelve finalists in the 2007 season of American Idol.  He was voted off of Season Six on March 28.  

 

Bethel Head Announces Retirement
George Brushaber, the longtime president of Bethel University (MN), announced Friday that he'll retire in June 2008.

NACCAP Champs
The Indiana Wesleyan University Lady Wildcats recorded a perfect 38-0 record this year, culminating in the NAIA Division II national championship with a 48-34 victory over College of the Ozarks.

The Calvin College (MI) men’s cross country team captured its fourth NCAA Division III national title in 2006, posting an unprecedented six All-America finishes in the process.

IWU: Ever Expanding Student Center
Indiana Wesleyan University has again expanded its Student Center, this time with a 67,000 square foot addition that brings the total size to 187,000 square feet.  The Student Center includes a convenience store, cafeteria, bookstore, movie theater, offices and a health center.

Houghton Reaches Higher
Houghton College (NY) has completed a third floor addition to its library.  The addition provides 14 faculty offices, six classrooms and study space.

Movin’ On Up

Vanguard University (CA) has promoted Jessica Mireles to Vice President for Enrollment Management.  She has worked for fifteen years in VU’s enrollment management center.  

 

 

 

 

Brent Rudin has been promoted to Dean of Enrollment Management at Cornerstone University (MI).

 

 

Palmer Muntz is joining Taylor University Fort Wayne (IN) as Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management after seven years at Oregon Institute of Technology.

Asbury’s Amazing DVD
Asbury College (KY) faculty and students recently partnered with Bristol Bay Productions, a sister company to Walden Media, to produce an educational DVD to accompany the 2007 movie Amazing Grace.  The project includes a number of original documentaries created by the Asbury team.

New Majors at Roberts
Roberts Wesleyan College (NY) has added majors in Forensic Science and in Economic Crime Investigation, which blends courses from criminal justice, accounting and computer science.
